Description
Metronidazole is an antibacterial and antiprotozoal prescription medication in the nitroimidazole class. In tablet form (500 mg), it is taken orally and works by disrupting the DNA of certain bacteria and protozoa, which inhibits their growth and leads to their death. It is widely used in clinical practice to treat a variety of infections caused by susceptible organisms.
🩺 Uses
Metronidazole 500 mg tablets are used for the treatment and prevention of infections caused by anaerobic bacteria and certain protozoa, including:

Anaerobic bacterial infections (e.g., intra-abdominal, pelvic, skin and soft tissue, septicemia).

Bacterial vaginosis and urogenital infections (including those caused by Gardnerella vaginalis).

Trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted protozoal infection (Trichomonas vaginalis).

Amebiasis (intestinal and extra-intestinal infection caused by Entamoeba histolytica).

Giardiasis, an infection of the small intestine by Giardia lamblia.

As part of combination therapy for Helicobacter pylori-associated peptic ulcer disease (when used with other antibiotics and a proton pump inhibitor).
