Metronidazole is an antibacterial and antiprotozoal prescription medication in the nitroimidazole class. It is widely used in clinical practice to treat a variety of infections caused by susceptible organisms.

🩺 Uses

Metronidazole 500 mg tablets are used for the treatment and prevention of infections caused by anaerobic bacteria and certain protozoa, including:

• Anaerobic bacterial infections (e.g., intra-abdominal, pelvic, skin and soft tissue, septicemia).

• Bacterial vaginosis and urogenital infections (including those caused by Gardnerella vaginalis).

• Trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted protozoal infection (Trichomonas vaginalis).

• Amebiasis (intestinal and extra-intestinal infection caused by Entamoeba histolytica).

• Giardiasis, an infection of the small intestine by Giardia lamblia.

• As part of combination therapy for Helicobacter pylori-associated peptic ulcer disease (when used with other antibiotics and a proton pump inhibitor).
