Description:

Ethambutol is a bacteriostatic antibiotic — meaning it stops the growth of bacteria rather than killing them directly. It’s part of a group of medicines used to treat infections caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium responsible for tuberculosis (TB).

Uses:

Ethambutol 400 mg is mainly used for:

• Treatment of active tuberculosis (TB) — both pulmonary (lungs) and extrapulmonary (other body sites) TB when combined with other first-line TB medicines such as isoniazid, rifampicin, and pyrazinamide.

• Prevention of resistance to other TB drugs when used as part of a combination therapy.

• Sometimes used (based on doctor decision) for infections caused by atypical mycobacteria in special cases.
